An inherited authority is an authority that a role has inherited from a child sub-role. See [Add a Child Sub Role to a Parent Role](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1983643715/Inherited+Authorities+and+Sub-Roles#Add-a-Child-Sub-Role-to-a-Parent-Role) for details of how to create sub-roles. You can use the Security Manager to identify inherited authorities and to prevent authorities from being inherited.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You can see whether an authority is *inheritable* by selecting the authority in Security Manager and looking at the **Inherited** checkbox on the Details tab*.*

# Viewing Inherited Authorities

When you view authorities by role in the Security Manager > By Role tab, the tree view displays which authorities are directly granted to that role, and which are inherited from a sub-role.

## What Role has an Authority Been Inherited From?

To determine what role the authority has been inherited FROM, select the parent role in the Roles module and check the **Sub-Role Privileges** tab. Any role for which the privileges *Grant Authority* or *All Access* has been assigned will behave as a child sub-role of the parent role. See [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1983643715](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1983643715) for more details.

# Prevent an Authority from Being Inherited

It is convenient to add authorities to a role by adding sub-roles, but there may be some authorities that you do not want to be inherited.

> ℹ️ **Example**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You might prevent inheritance for security sensitive modules such as the Roles module.

You can use the Security Manager to prevent an authority from being inherited by a parent role.

1. In the Security Manager, select the authority that you want to configure.
2. On the Details tab, click **Edit**. This makes the fields on the tab editable.
3. Clear the** Inheritance **checkbox to prevent the authority from being inherited. This will apply for all the authorities for this object.
4. Click **Save** to save your changes.
