An authority is a relationship between a role, a party (or parties), and an object that gives the party the ability to do something to an object. To give a party access to an object when they log in using a role, you must add an authority for that object to the party using that role.

> ℹ️ Some object types might be disabled in the Object Chooser, and you will not be able to add an authority for the object type. If you need to add an authority for this type of object, you must first associate the role with the object type. # Who can add an authority to a role?

You can add an authority to a role if your role has *Grant Authority* privileges for that role. These privileges are configured in the Sub-Role Privileges tab of the roles module. # How do I Add an Authority for Anyone with a Role?

If you want to add an authority for a role that will apply to anyone with that role, you add an authority for ALL PARTIES rather than for a specific party.

1. Open the **Roles** module and select the role to which you want to add an authority.
2. On the Authority tab, click **Insert**. The Inserting Authority screen opens.
3. Fill in the form details:
  - **Role** - the role for this authority. The authority will apply only when the party is logged in with this role.
  - **Party** - Enter ALL PARTIES if you want all parties with this role to have this authority. Click **Search** to open the Party Chooser if you need to search for the party.
  - **Access** - enter the object to which the authority will apply. Click **Search** to open the Object Chooser if you need to search for the object.
4. Click **Save** to save your changes.

> ℹ️ There is an exception for the Planner role. If you have only applied ALL PARTIES access to an area or group for Planners, then when a specific planner is logged into the area or group ALL PARTIES access will be temporarily removed until that planner has logged out. This allows you to restrict planner access to the currently logged in planner for users of SiteConnect and NetworkConnect.
