Users log in to Rubicon applications using a specific role and their authentication details. You must configure at least one role for a user before you can configure their authentication details.

# Assign a Role for the User

> ℹ️ **Permissions**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You must have *Grant authority* privilege over any role that you assign an authority to.

**Step 1**

On the **Parties > Authority** tab, click **Insert**. The Inserting Authority screen opens.

**Step 2**

Select the role that the party will use to log in.

**Step 3**

Beside the **Access** field, click **Find** to open the Object Chooser screen to select an object for which the role will apply.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ The type of object to choose depends on the type of role the user will have.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - For staff this will often be the system object, and/or a specific group or area.
> ℹ️ - For OWNERs this will typically be a water account (property/ABA/parcel).
> ℹ️ - For OPERATORs this will typically be an outlet (service point/ turnout)

**Step 4**

In the **Type** field of the Object Chooser, select an appropriate object type. You can use the search tool to search for object types.

**Step 5**

Click **OK** to select the object.

**Step 6**

In the Inserting Authority screen, click **Save** to save your changes.

# Configure the user account settings

You can now provide account details for the authorisation groups that the user will have access to.

> ℹ️ **Permissions**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You must have *Edit user accounts* privilege over the user's role.

**Step 1**

On the **Parties > Accounts** tab, click **Edit**, to change the account settings for that party.

**Step 2**

In the **Authentication Groups** panel, click **Add** and select the authentication group for the applications that you want to give the user access to.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Choose *Customer Applications* if you are giving a user access to the Irrigator Portal or to CustomerConnect.
> ℹ️ - Choose *Business Applications* for other applications.

**Step 3**

Click **Save** to save your changes.

**Step 4**

The **New Password** screen will pop up. Select the **I confirm that party identity is verified** check box to confirm that you have checked the user's credentials.

**Step 5**

If the user has an email address or a mobile phone, click **Send** to automatically send the new password by email or SMS, otherwise click **Generate** to display the password on the screen. You can then contact the user and tell them the password.

**Step 6**

The user is prompted to change the password as soon as they log in.
