# What is an Authority?

An authority is the right to do something. For example, to order water for a property, to log in to the system, or to receive invoices. To give a party an authority, you specify the role they will have, and the object that the authority will apply to. You can view and manage authorities and role assignments on the **Authority** tab of the Parties module.

# What is a Role?

A role is a collection of authorities. See the [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1979547768](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1979547768) for more information about Roles in Rubicon applications and see the [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1979449436](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1979449436) for more information about how roles are configured using functions and scopes.
