# How is the Amount of Rationing Calculated?

For each cycle in the Ration Period the amount of water that can be supplied to each authorisation in the affected Planning Area is calculated as:

(*Cycle Length*) x (*Delivery/Extraction Share*) x (*Delivery Share %*)

- The *Cycle Length* is set when you create the Ration Period.
- The *Delivery/Extraction Share *is an attribute on the Authorisation that sets the maximum volume of water in ML that can be supplied to the authorisation per day.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ For shared service points this value is shared among all the associated authorisations and the water is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

- The *Delivery Share %* is set when you create the Ration Period.

> ℹ️ **Example**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ For example, if:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - A cycle is ten days long
> ℹ️ - The Deliver/Extraction Share for an authorisation is 2ML
> ℹ️ - The Delivery Share % is 80
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ Then the maximum available water that can be supplied to the authorisation within a single cycle is:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ 10 x 2 x 0.8 = 16 ML

# How is Rationing Applied?

For each cycle, if an order exceeds its available water for the cycle then the finish date of the order is brought forward to restrict the amount of water supplied. The flow rate of the order is not affected.
