# Field Hazards

Field operations are potentially hazardous. This page lists common hazards and options for dealing with them. (Hazards that are specific to particular activities may also be listed in the relevant topics).

> ℹ️ **Caution**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If any of these hazards are present, refer to the relevant Occupational Health and Safety regulations for the region for guidance.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If there is a conflict between the instructions in this manual and an applicable national or local safety code, the national or local code must take precedence.

## Environmental Hazards

Hazards related to working outdoors

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Extreme weather**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Be aware of expected weather conditions and wear suitable clothing
> ℹ️ - In hot weather, take sunscreen and adequate drinking water. Watch your companions for signs of dehydration.
> ℹ️ - In cold weather, wear warm clothing and carry chains for vehicles.

## Site Hazards

Hazards that apply when working in remote or rural areas or around water

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Deep water**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ De-water the gate, if possible, when working onsite. If this is not practicable:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Wear a life jacket and a quick-release tool belt
> ℹ️ - Keep flotation devices in the work area
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If the gearbox fails, or a cable breaks, the gate will not operate which may lead to flooding. If this happens, we recommend that you build a bulkhead as an intermediate solution until the gate is fixed or replaced.

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Heights**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Use fall prevention devices such as guard rails and harnesses
> ℹ️ - Follow approved safety procedures when working with ladders or elevated platforms
> ℹ️ - Provide safe access to the gate

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Fire**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Observe local fire restrictions. Obtain a hot works permit if applicable.
> ℹ️ - Inspect heating equipment regularly and ensure that it meets an appropriate standard. If you are using a blow torch and gas bottles, make sure they are serviceable and fit for purpose.
> ℹ️ - Ensure that flammable materials are safely stored
> ℹ️ - Keep the work area clear of flammable material
> ℹ️ - Carry a fire extinguisher

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Slippery surfaces and trip hazards**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Wear slip resistant footwear
> ℹ️ - Keep access ways clear

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Dangerous animals and livestock**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - If there is livestock in the area, barricade off the work area or have livestock moved.
> ℹ️ - Watch out for snakes and biting insects when lifting equipment or removing covers.
> ℹ️ - Carry a first aid kit
> ℹ️ - Carry an EpiPen in the case of allergies.

## Work Hazards

Hazards that apply to working with machinery and power tools or with heavy equipment.

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Moving parts**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Keep your hands clear of moving parts
> ℹ️ - Ensure that machinery cannot start unexpectedly. Use lockout procedures if necessary.
> ℹ️ - Secure heavy equipment
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ When a gate is operating under Remote Control, it may move unexpectedly. Make sure that any remote operators are aware that you are working on site.

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Pinch and crush**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Watch for pinch points when moving or adjusting equipment.
> ℹ️ - Use a pry bar where appropriate

> ℹ️ **Hazard: Sharp objects**
> ℹ️
