Some messages are only relevant to customers in a certain area or group. In this case, you do not want other customers to receive messages of this type. You can make a comm type available to a subset of recipients by adding the comm type to a group.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ In this context, “group” refers to a group of objects such as properties or outlets, not a [group party](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UMNC/pages/1983905808).

Only customers in that group, will be able to register for communications of that type. Other customers will not see the comm type as an option in the web water ordering portal.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - You can still restrict any individual messages to a specific group when you send it through the [Customer Comms Module](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MSGNC/pages/2008645633).
> ℹ️ - You can still add a registration for a customer who does not belong to the group, but they do not have the option to select the comm type themselves.

# What Does it Mean for a Customer to be in a Group?

Customers are parties and cannot directly belong to an object group. Instead, when you add a comm type to a group, any party who has an authority over an object in the group can register for the communications.

> ℹ️ **Example**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ These customers are some of the parties who could register for a group comm type:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Parties who have OWNER authority over a property in the group.
> ℹ️ - Parties who have OPERATOR authority over an outlet in the group.

4. Click **OK** to select the group.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ This will not affect any existing registrations for the comm type.
