Create object types to create more specialised objects from the base types. The new sub-types will inherit the properties of their parent object type, and can also be given properties, attributes, roles and relationships of their own.

To create an object type:

**Step 1**

In the Object Types module, select the parent object type of the new object type.

**Step 1**

Click **Add** to create a new object type as a sub-type of the selected object type.

**Step 3**

Enter these details.

> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ When you save the object type, you will not be able to modify properties unless they are marked in the table as modifiable.

| Description | Enter a description of the object type. | No |
| Label | Enter a label to use when the object type appears in the application interface. | Yes |
| Graphic Icon | If the object type will be used in network schematics, select the icon to use for the object. You can use the built-in icons or create your own icons using the [Icon Builder](https://support.rubiconwater.com/help/dms/content/topics/modules/iconbuilder/land_iconbuildermodule.htm). This will also apply to any subtypes. | Yes |
| System Required | This identifies object types that are required for the correct operation of the software.You cannot set this property for your own objects. | No |
| Unique Name | Select this field to ensure that each object of this type has a unique name. | No |
| Update Name | Select this field to allow the object name to be changed. | Yes |

> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ Setting the Graphic Icon for an object type will overwrite the setting on any sub-object types. If you change this value on a parent object type, make a note of any existing settings on sub-object types and re-set them after you make your changes.

**Step 4 **

Click **Save** to save your changes.
