Charges can be applied either to an individual account, or to an area or group. Any properties that are included in the area or group (or have outlets or authorisations in the area or group) can have the charge applied to their accounts.

You can use existing areas or groups for billing, or create your own billing groups. Groups can include other groups and areas, so you can set up a complex billing structure if necessary.

This topic explains how to set up a single group for billing and add properties to the group.

# Create a group:

1. Click **Groups** to open the [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SMNC/pages/2001011511](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SMNC/pages/2001011511).
2. Select the type of group that you want to create and click **Add Group** to create a new group of that type.
3. Enter a **Name** for the group and click **Save** to save your changes.

# Add a Property to a Billing Group

1. In the Groups module, select the billing group.
2. On the Components tab, click **Edit** to make the component list editable.
3. Click **Add**, then select the property that you want to add as a group component.
4. Click **Save** to save your changes. The group will be generated to add all the included properties to the group. This may take some time.

You can now select this group when you create or modify a charge type.

# Checking that Properties are in a Billing Group

Run the **Properties Not In a Billing Charge Group** report to find properties that have not been added to any billing group.

# What Happens When Authorisations and Properties are not in the Same Group?

In some cases, an authorisation may not be in the same group as its associated property. For example:

- A group that is based on an area may contain an authorisation that falls within in the area but its associated property is in a different area.
- You may have deliberately excluded the authorisation from the group to control the application of charges. (See [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SMNC/pages/2000979114](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SMNC/pages/2000979114) for details of how to do this).

When charges are calculated for a group AND the **Object Type** of the charge is *Authorisation* then the charge will be applied to all authorisations in the group and it will not be applied to any excluded authorisations.
