# What is alarm shelving?

Shelving is a way of suppressing alarm actions for a tag. You can shelve alarms for any tag for a specified period.

> ℹ️ **Example**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You might shelve alarms if you know that the site is undergoing maintenance and you don't want to be bothered by excessive alarm notifications.

The alarms will still be triggered while they are shelved, but no alarm actions will be performed - for example, no alarm notifications will be sent. When the alarms are unshelved alarm actions will recommence.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If an alarm was triggered during the shelving period and is still active when the alarms are unshelved, the actions for that alarm will be applied immediately.

# Who can shelve alarms?

You must have the SHELVING role to be able to shelve alarms.

# How are alarms unshelved?

When you shelve alarms for a tag, you must specify the length of the shelving period. At the end of the shelving period, the alarms are automatically unshelved. You can also manually change the shelving period, or immediately unshelve the alarms.

# Auditing and reporting on alarm shelving

Alarm shelving events are tracked in the data audit log which is available in the host applications in the [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DMNC/pages/2050556037](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DMNC/pages/2050556037). There is also an **Alarm Shelving Report** available in DMS. See [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RptNC/pages/1987117487](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RptNC/pages/1987117487) for details.

# Viewing shelved alarms in the Alarm List

By default, shelved alarms are filtered out of the default tab on the Alarm List (but you can adjust the filters if you choose). When you display all alarms, shelved alarms are indicated by a tick in the **Shelved** column. The Alarm List also includes a tab that is filtered to show only shelved alarms (see <u>[Sorting and Filtering the Alarm List](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ANC/pages/1990361425)</u> for more information about filtering including for shelved alarms).

You can access the Alarm List by opening the Network Schematic (for example, from the Plan History Module), or from SCADAConnect Desktop.

# Shelving alarms for a tag

**Step 1**

Select the alarm that you want to shelve from the Alarm List.

**Step 2**

Right-click and choose Alarm Shelving from the shortcut menu.

**Step 3**

On the Alarm Shelving screen, click **Edit**

Enter the following details:

- Reason for shelving the alarm
- Duration of the shelving period (or time when you want the period to end). This must be no longer than the configured maximum shelving period for the system.
- (Optional) Any notes you want to make about the shelving period.

# Changing or Unshelving alarms

You can change the shelving period while the alarms are shelved.

**Step 1**

Right-click on a shelved alarm and choose Alarm Shelving from the context menu.

**Step 2**

On the Shelving Update screen, click the Edit button to change the shelving period.

**Step 3**

You can now change the Reason Type, or change the shelving period by choosing one of the following options:

- Extend the shelving period by a specified number of minutes.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ Note that if you extend a shelving period, the maximum time limit is still calculated from the time when you first shelved the alarms. For example, if you set the period to the maximum allowed, you cannot later extend the period. If you need to extend the period, unshelve and reshelve the alarms.

- Reduce the shelving period by a specified number of minutes. If you reduce the period by more minutes than remain the alarms are immediately unshelved.
- Unshelve at a specific time.
- Unshelve immediately.
